The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has formally recognized John “Abaja” Laryea as the new IBF Continental Africa Featherweight Champion. The confirmation follows Laryea’s decisive victory over Holy Dorgbetor.
The title fight, which took place on December 20, 2025, at the University of Ghana’s Legon Stadium, was a headline event for Sharaf Mahama’s Legacy Rise Sports. By adding the IBF strap to his collection, Laryea has cemented his status as a triple champion, having previously held the WBO Africa title on two occasions.
In an official letter sent to Laryea’s camp, Carlos Ortiz, Jr., the IBF Vice-Championships Chairman, lauded the boxer’s performance.
“The IBF is honored to officially recognize you as the IBF Continental Africa Featherweight Champion,” the letter stated. “Your win over Holy Dorgbetor… proves to the world you are a true champion.”
Laryea’s manager, Mr. Sammy Anim Addo, expressed his delight at the official validation. The IBF has indicated they will contact the new champion regarding mandatory defenses in due course.
