Voter Register Exhibition: Low Turnout In Akim Oda, Other Areas Attributed To Online Checks

The ongoing voter register exhibition exercise in the Akyem Oda Constituency is witnessing a low turnout.

Checks at exhibition centres in the Birim Central Municipality indicate the one-week exercise which began on Tuesday has witnessed a low number of voters checking their names in the register.

During the Ahenkan News Team’s tour to some of the exhibition centers, the exhibition officers told the paper that voters are required to bring along their voter’s identity cards to check their names.

“We check correct names that include spelling and crosscheck in the register, age, and picture. When these vital statistics are correct we declare one checked.

However, when the names are not correct we fill out a correction form for the voter and give him or her a copy to send to the district EC office for correction.

The exhibition officers described the process so far as, ‘not encouraging’.

Information received from other constituencies in the Eastern Region indicates that the exhibition exercise’s turnout is unsatisfactory.

Speaking to Adwenpa-Hene Kofi Mensah on the Maakye morning show, Albert Kweku Simpson Director of Communication Ballot Education Project attributed the low turnout at exhibition centers to the option of online checks being done at the same time by voters.

“I believe it may be due to the online checking,”  he said.

He praises the Electoral Commission for the move as well, noting that Ghanaians will see a reduction in stress and expenses.
