The long-awaited Ahenkan FM football fiesta kicked off in Akyem Batabi on 3rd August 2024, Saturday morning at exactly 10:00 am, where the chief of Batabi kicked the ball to pave the way for the start of the tournament.
The DCE of Asene Manso Akroso District, Honorable Alex Inkoom graced the tournament with his presence.
Other dignitaries who blessed the occasion with their presence included, the former chairman of Birim Central District Football Association, Rev. Emmanuel Obeng Dompreh, Mr. Mark Osei from Oda National Sports Authority, Mr. Okatakyie Afrifah, the communications director of Kotoku Royals FC, the honorable Assembly Member of Aboabo electoral area, Emmanuel Appiah Kubi among other prominent personalities.
Scouts from Kenpong Football Academy, Coach Patrick, and the Manager of Kenpong Soccer Academy, Mark Hansen were present at the tournament to fetch fine and exceptional talents.
Akyem Aboabo beat Akyem Essam by one goal to nil in the opening match.
The lone goal was scored by Indomie the leading striker of team Akyem Aboabo in the second half of the match.
The second game of the tournament was played between Akyem Asene and Akyem Abenase where Akyem Abenase won by one goal. The goal was scored in the first half by Isco. The number eleven beautifully taped in a cross from the right side of their attack.
The third game of the tournament was staged by Akyem Bieni and Akyem Oda Nkwanta. The two teams competed very well. Number eleven-shirted man, Kwadwo Mensah scored for Akyem Bieni on the 75th minute and they held onto the lone goal till the final whistle was blown.
The very last game in the first round of the tournament saw Akyem Gyaha and Akyem Nyamebekyere battle for three points but penalty shootouts helped Akyem Gyaha to face Akyem Batabi in the semi-finals play-off match after beating Nyamebekyere 2-0 in the shoot outs.
The semi-final play-off match saw the number 10 for Batabi, Boadi Samuel netting the opener after just 15 minutes of game time played. Batabi did well by holding on to their only goal scored in the first half to the end of the regulation time.
The semi-finals featured four teams, Batabi, Abenase, Bieni, and Aboabo. Abenase was drawn with Bieni whilst Aboabo faced Batabi.
Abenase and Bieni played the first match and Bieni had the first goal in the 21st minute.
The first half ended with Bieni leading with one goal to nil. The second half saw Abenase kicking the ball first but they could not turn the score line around so Bieni went ahead and won the match by 1-0.
The second match of the semi-finals featured Aboabo and Batabi. Batabi kicked the ball first. The first half of the match ended in a goalless draw. In the second half, Aboabo scored a free kick on the 88th minute through their number 14, Okro which helped them to win the match.
The final match of the tournament was staged between Aboabo and Bieni. Both teams had a good run right from the first round of matches and forced their way through to the final where they competed for the ultimate.
The first half of the final match recorded no goal from both sides. Both teams in the final showcased fine and entertaining football skills throughout the time played.
Bieni came into the second half with a different mentality and created quite a number of goal scoring opportunities but failed to convert all. Aboabo on the hand tried to keep their cool and controlled the tempo of the game but yielded no result. It was no surprise to see the match travel into penalty shoot outs after a goalless draw at the end of regulation time. Aboabo won the shoot outs 4-3 over Bieni.
At the end of the tournament, Aboabo emerged as champions and took the gold medals while Bieni took the silver medals as the runners-up.
Akyem Aboabo the champions took home GHC1000 and the runners-up, Bieni had GHC500. Other logistics like sets of football jerseys and footballs were given to the finalists.
